The Johnson City Chamber of Commerce, Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Parks & Recreation Department announced three significant events coming to Johnson City. The ASA Girl’s Slow Pitch National Championships for the 10, 12, 14, 16 & 18 year olds. Commissioner Jeff Banyas stated, “This is literally five tournaments in one and we are expecting a good turnout of teams seeing that the southeast is a hot bed for girl’s slow pitch.” This event will be held at Winged Deer Park, July 24-27, 2008. Commissioner Banyas also announced that the City was awarded the 2009 ASA 10 & under Class A Girl’s Fast Pitch National Championship. The Johnson City Convention & Visitors Bureau states these two events will generate approximately $2 million direct dollars into the local economy. However, the best was still to come when the Johnson City Parks & Recreation Athletic Director and ASA State Director, James Ellis, announced that the ASA/USA Bound for Beijing tour would be stopping in Johnson City. This tour showcases the United States Olympic Women’s Softball National Team as they will be playing an exhibition game against Milligan College. Melissa Steagall-Jones, the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce’s Chair-Elect, stated “Johnson City is one of 45 cities in the US that will have this opportunity and that Milligan College’s Lady Buffs will be the first NAIA school and team to play an Olympic team in history.” Milligan College’s Head Coach, Wes Holly, said “his team is excited and look forward to this opportunity.” The game will be held in Johnson City at Cardinal Park on Sunday, April 13, 2008.
